Description

KING COUNTY, WA — Washington State Patrol is working to track down the people responsible for a recent rash of copper thefts along King County freeways, particularly along State Route 167 and State Route 518, officials said Wednesday. WSP detectives estimate thieves have already racked up more than $100,000 in copper wire, tolls and damage to junction boxes operated by the Washington State Department of Transportation. Troopers said many thefts have happened during daylight hours and could appear as routine maintenance work to passersby. WSP said two suspects were caught in the act stealing wiring Tuesday along State Route 509, but investigators were unable to link them to other thefts in the region. (Washington State Patrol) Commuters who travel along any King County freeways and notice something suspicious around a junction box are encouraged to call 911. Anyone with information about previous thefts can reach detectives via e-mail.
