Naugatuck Valley Community College Partnership with Waterbury Symphony Orchestra Produces Musical Performance with Maria Wirries WATERBURY - NVCC is hosting a musical performance by singer, actress, dancer, songwriter, Maria Wirries. The event, to be held in the Choir Room of the Music department at NVCC on Friday, December 10 at 1:00 pm, developed from the partnership between the College and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (WSO). The Symphony has been the Orchestra-in-Residence at Naugatuck Valley Community College since 1992. Maestro Leif Bjaland, Music Director & Conductor of the WSO, suggested this event as an opportunity for NVCC music and theater students to see, hear, and chat with Wirries about her career. NVCC CEO, Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D. commented, "She's a model for our students -- a real inspirational and aspirational one!" The performance for students is Friday, Dec. 10, in Room A507 on the Waterbury campus of the College at 1:00 pm. Maria Wirries will perform three songs accompanied by Dr. Gil Harel, Associate Professor of Music at NVCC: "No One Else" from Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (music and lyrics by Dave Malloy) "Christmas Lullaby" from Songs for a New World (music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown) "On the Steps of the Palace" from Into the Woods (music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) Maria Wirries will be available to talk with students following the performance. Wirries will perform the Winter Solstice Concert at three of northwest Connecticut's iconic churches this weekend. Lift your spirits this season in a festival of light and joy with the program that includes a mix of seasonal favorites that celebrate the different holiday traditions in our community, featuring vocalist Maria Wirries along with organist William Trafka and the WSO's Brass and Percussion Ensemble.
