BAY SHORE, NY — A Long Island hospital recently completed the first phase of a $71 million renovation of its Woman and Infants Center, to provide quality care for postpartum mothers and babies. South Shore University Hospital announced Thursday that Phase 1 of its multi-million dollar upgrade includes the completion of 11 postpartum private suites and four dedicated obstetrical-triage beds. With accommodations for families, the suites feature private bathrooms and closets, LCD flat-screen televisions as well as recliners and sofas that convert to pull-out beds. The four new triage beds will be staffed 24/7 by an obstetrician and registered nurses, SSUH representatives said. "The commitment by this hospital and health system to providing state-of-the-art care for women and infants in the eastern region of Long Island is nothing short of spectacular," said Dr. Peter Finamore, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at SSUH. When the 45,560-square-foot, two-story center is completed by the end of 2023, the Woman and Infants Center will have its own dedicated entrance, making it a "hospital-within-a-hospital", SSUH representatives said. It will also have an upgraded 16-bed, all-private suite neonatal intensive care unit. "This transformation has made South Shore University Hospital the pre-eminent destination for women's health care in Suffolk County," said Donna Moravick, RN, NP, executive director of South Shore University Hospital. "World-class care is available right here in Bay Shore and I am proud of our team for making it possible." SSUH also plans to open two state-of-the-art operating rooms that will be dedicated to women's health procedures, including a new da Vinci surgical system to perform minimally invasive, robotic-assisted gynecologic procedures. This October, SSUH was Baby Friendly designated, making it one of the best places to give birth in the country, the honor noted. The Women and Infants Center expansion is part of a $500 million, five-year investment in South Shore University Hospital to expand both services and quality of care to Suffolk County residents.
