Description

Press release from Albuquerque Public Schools: December 8, 2021 Teachers and school staff will start a week earlier than students: Wednesday, August 3, for schools on the traditional calendar. Wednesday, July 20, for schools on an extended-year calendar. The only difference between the two calendars is the start date because the extended-year calendar provides an additional 10 days of instruction for students. All holidays and breaks are the same, as is the last day of school, May 25, 2023.  As of now, APS has 20 elementary schools on the extended-year calendar: Armijo, Atrisco, Barcelona, Bellehaven, Bel-Air, Carlos Rey, Edward Gonzales, Emerson, Helen Cordero, Hawthorne, Kirtland, Kit Carson, Lavaland, Los Padillas, Lowell, Mountain View, Navajo, Pajarito, Tomasita, and Whittier. All other APS schools, including middle and high schools, are on a traditional calendar.  Fall Break: Schools will be closed for three days, from Thursday, October 6, through Monday, October 10, which is Indigenous Peoples' Day.  Winter Break: Schools will be closed from Wednesday, December 21, through Tuesday, January 3, 2023, with teachers returning on Wednesday, January 4, for training and students returning on Thursday, January 5, for the beginning of the second semester. Spring Break: Schools will be closed the week of March 20, preceded by elementary and middle school parent/teacher conferences on March 16 and 17.   The 2022-2023 calendars have several similarities to past calendars, including:  A three-day Thanksgiving break for schools following two days of parent/teacher conferences for all grades in November  A day off for Labor Day in September, Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January, and Presidents' Day in February   School closures for Election Day and Veterans Day in November A two-day break for schools for the Vernal Holiday in April   Both calendars were developed by a committee of principals, union representatives, and district administrators. The committee sought public input, which promoted some changes to the calendars presented to the Board of Education on December 8.   This press release was produced by Albuquerque Public Schools.
