CONCORD, NH — If you did not know this already, New Hampshire residents are generous. How do we know? GoFundMe.com told us. The world's largest fundraising platform released its "giving report" on Tuesday and ranked the Granite State as the ninth most generous state in the nation when it came to supporting people, causes, and organizations. Actually, when it comes to New England, there are a lot of generous folks up here — Massachusetts was ranked first; Vermont second; Connecticut third; Rhode Island fifth; and Maine 10th. "If 2020 was a year in crisis, 2021 was The Year of Gratitude," the company said in a news release. "We saw this sentiment echoed throughout the GoFundMe community, with 15 million messages of thank you to and from the community and millions of donors who stepped up to help others every day." One of the most successful fundraisers was the Blazing New Trails: Help Jim Harvey defy the odds, which assisted the Windham coach and father in raising nearly $325,000 after a spinal cord injury. House Session To Be Held At Hotel The New Hampshire House of Representatives will be meeting in January away from Concord and, instead, at a Manchester hotel. The DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Downtown exposition center will be leased between Jan. 5, and Jan. 7, for the next session. The space, about 30,000 square-foot, will allow legislators to be seated on a socially distanced floor, according to House Speaker Sherman Packard (R-Londonderry). The space will also accommodate seating sections for both masked and unmasked state representatives. "With hospitalizations at record levels and community transmission still high, the responsible thing to do is to maintain health and safety protocols for our legislators and hold off on returning to the House chamber, at least for now," Packard said. "We plan on taking the same level of precaution as we did at UNH in 2020 and at the NH Sportsplex in 2021 to ensure as much risk as possible can be mitigated, while still being able to meet in person to get the people's business done." There were no known COVID-19 transmissions at any legislative session event in 2020 or 2021, according to officials. Due to other bookings, the NH Sportsplex in Bedford, which was used earlier this year, was not an option. Packard thanked the facility though for its previous assistance. Moose Plates Lead To Grants Fifteen projects will receive $379,913 in grants next year due to money raised via moose plates. The state conservation committee held a competitive process for the funds, looking for projects that "enhance conservation benefits" like water quality, habitat, soil, flooding, and planning, too. Scout groups can apply for the funds; so can conservation orgs, nonprofits, and schools. Grants in and around Patch communities include $30,000 to the Five Rivers Conservation Trust for Potter Family Farm; $29,648 for soil health by the Hillsborough County Conservation District; and $30,000 to the Merrimack County Conservation District for improving aquatic organism passage at Rocky Pond in Canterbury and Loudon and $27,000 for the promotion of no-till practices via rental equipment.
