WOBURN, MA — Woburn unveiled 3D renderings of the planned new fire headquarters Friday, six months after construction began on the $23 million facility. The city expects the Forest Park project to be completed in Nov. 2022, it said. In Feb. 2020, City Council authorized a $30 million plan including the new headquarters plus $7 million in renovations to upgrade existing stations. In June 2020, the city won approval from the state legislature for a land swap, allowing it to build the fire headquarters on formerly-protected conservation land. Ground was broken at Forest Park in Aug. 2020, with site clearing, and construction began in May, 2021. "To fund the project the city issued a twenty-year bond in June of 2021, taking advantage of its AAA bond rating to receive an interest rate of 1.67 percent," the city said. "The annual debt service will be approximately $1,390,000." Renderings of the design are available here, as are photos and footage of the process, spending to date and more information. DiNisco Design designed the fire station. "Our Fire Department continues to provide the highest level of quality public safety services to our community, delivered with increased safety by our firefighters" Mayor Scott Galvin said in a statement. "We are very pleased to be moving forward with our proposal to build a new Fire Station Headquarters and vastly improve fire service functions and operation for our residents and firefighters."
