Description

My philosophy is "Everything I ever needed to know about business I learned on the sports field." From Behind The Scoreboard, I feature the sports stories that tell us much more than simply who won or lost. These personal and inspiring experiences of grade school, high school, college, other amateur and even pro athletes allow all of us to reflect a little more on what is important in life. ~ James C. Metzger, Chairman and CEO, The Whitmore Agency _______ A Really Big Equality “Shew” For those of you who recall Ed Sullivan, well you wouldn’t think of him as an athlete. But, in his youth, Ed played baseball, basketball and football. His teamwork and those he befriended during this time would define his character throughout his life. Ed enjoyed the friendship of teammates and opponents of all races. He would become a life-long anti-racism champion. His ideals were embedded in his work. When The Ed Sullivan Show was in its infancy, Ed incorporated lessons from his youth—the importance of tolerance and inclusion. For a while, and despite opposition and criticism, he was the only presenter to showcase African-American entertainers. From sports to entertainment, Ed provided the world with a huge lesson about equality. Learn more about Ed’s contributions in my blog. Photo: Ed Sullivan and The Supremes
