Guitarist Joseph Terrell of High Point was a Religious Studies major at Carolina, who teamed up in 2011 with mandolinist Jacob Sharp and bassist Wood Robinson, both of Greensboro, to form the indie-Americana Chapel Hill band Mipso, later joined by fiddler Libby Rodenbough.  In 2013, Mipso made its acclaimed debut with the album Dark Holler Pop, and Joseph Terrell won MerleFest’s Chris Austin Songwriting Contest. Mipso’s album Old Time Reverie, produced by the esteemed Mandolin Orange singer-songwriter Andrew Marlin, debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart.  Joseph Terrell has continued to serve Mipso as lead singer, guitarist and as a fine and productive songwriter, with a string of releases: 2017’s Coming Down the Mountain, 2018’s Edges Run, and, in the fall of 2020, the band’s sixth album, its Rounder Records debut:  Mipso. Joseph spent 2020 producing an album for acclaimed songwriter Shay Martin Lovette (“Scatter & Gather”), recording new music with his brother, Patrick Terrell, and recording a solo album of a batch of new songs that will be released soon. The tale of wayfaring songwriter Shay Martin Lovette is shaped by an enduring creative pursuit, an inseparable connection with the natural world, and a deep appreciation of the nonpareil musical voices of the past. Two years after his noteworthy debut, Swift Drifter, Lovette brings forth his sophomore record Scatter & Gather, a collection of songs that signal an undeniable shift in the gravity of his writing and arranging. Written mostly from a remote, creekside cabin, the songs reflect Lovette's role as a versatile harmonica-wielding, wordsmith, drifting between the formulas of folk, indie, and homestyle roots music. Recorded at the famed Rubber Room Recording Studio in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with producer Joseph Terrell of Mipso at the helm, Scatter & Gather draws in a force of celebrated North Carolina talent including members of Mipso and Watchhouse.
