NEW YORK CITY – Former Democratic Congressman Max Rose says he can't sit idly by as Republicans tear the country in two just to keep power. So, a year after he lost his seat to Republican Nicole Malliotakis by 6 percentage points, Rose announced in a video posted to his social media channels that he is seeking to regain his place in Washington representing New York's 11th District. Rose is attempting to regain his seat in a district that currently covers Staten Island and parts of southern Brooklyn. However, New York could lose one Congressional seat after the census, a process Democrats are hoping to take advantage to reduce the number of Republicans representing the state. In the video, which runs just more than 90 seconds, Rose — a combat veteran who is attempting to win in the heavily Republican Staten Island — says he wants to return to a more idealistic America. I'm running for Congress in #NY11 because I can't sit by while Republicans tear us apart just to hold onto power. The America we believe in is possible - one that is safe, affordable and fair. All we need are leaders willing to risk it all to fight for it. pic.twitter.com/Y0jtDtGSba— Max Rose (@MaxRose4NY) December 6, 2021 "Just look what people are going through," Rose said in the video announcing his candidacy for his old seat. "The worst crisis we have ever seen lands on our doorstep and then, the next day, another one. The alarm bells – they never stop ringing and the people we trust to fix it, they divide us. They lie to us, tearing America apart just to hold onto power." The video includes footage of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last January to which Rose says, "you look at that and it's easy to think that our best days are behind us. That nothing will change. Well, I disagree." In the video, Rose talks about leading combat troops in Afghanistan and advising the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon or fighting to end corruption in politics. "The story of America has always been that we do things that others say are impossible," Rose said. However, Malliotakis has already fallen back on some of the tactics she used in 2020 to defeat Rose. In a statement issued in response to Rose's announcement Monday, Malliotakis again linked her opponent to President Joe Biden and said Rose has embraced "the most radical elements of his party." "As an appointee of the Biden Administration, Rose has pushed Joe Biden's disastrous agenda that has caused rising crime, run-away inflation, and a border crisis," she said. Rose, who is contending for New York City's only swing seat, said he is running because "some things are bigger than elections," and has made a vow to chase after a different result than in 2020 when he said that people tell him that if he had listened to the polls rather than doing what he thought was right, he would have one. "Maybe that's true," Rose said in the video. "But for me, some things are much bigger than elections."
