Suspect In Waukesha Parade Deaths Faces New Charges

MILWAUKEE, WI — Darrell Brooks Jr., who is charged in the deaths of six people at the Waukesha Christmas parade, was also charged with witness intimidation and bail jumping by Milwaukee prosecutors. Brooks was charged with felony intimidation of a victim, felony intimidation of a witness and bail jumping between Nov. 5 and Nov. 15, according to a complaint from the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office. The charges were related to a Nov. 5 incident involving Brooks in which he was accused of running an unnamed woman over with the same Ford Escape SUV he is accused of driving through the Waukesha Christmas parade on Nov. 21. Brooks was charged on Nov. 5 with resisting an officer, bail jumping, battery, second-degree recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct. Brooks was in jail between Nov. 5 and Nov. 15 during which time he tried to persuade the woman over the phone not to give information to prosecutors, the complaint said. He told her he wanted to marry her, but "because of this situation, you know, there is a possibility I might not get out of prison, that I can die in prison, right?" "I'm sitting up here facing 60 f---ing years. … You have to keep your mouth shut," the complaint quoted Brooks saying. Brooks continued calling the woman for days, manipulating her and threatening her not to cooperate with authorities, the complaint said. Meanwhile, 16 Republican legislators asked Gov. Tony Evers on Monday to remove Milwaukee County District Attorney John T. Chisholm after Chisholm told county supervisors that a young assistant district attorney accidentally asked that Brooks' bail after the Nov. 5 be set at $1,000.
