MINEOLA, NY — A confrontation with police officers led to a Mineola man being arrested for assault, Nassau County police say.
According to police, at 1:55 a.m. on Dec. 7, Peter Belton, 29, of Mineola, was standing in a parking lot on Mineola Boulevard when he threatened a woman passing by. Police say Belton said he was going to stab the woman and lunged toward her. The woman fled and called 911.
An officer found Belton walking on 2nd Street a few minutes later. Police say the officer asked Belton to stop walking, and he became combative and punched the officer in the face.
The officer tried to place Belton under arrest, police said, but he started to flail his arms and resist. More officers arrived at the scene and were able to get Belton into custody, police said.
The woman was not injured. The officer suffered bruising to his face, as well as cuts to his face and hands. Belton injured his elbow. Both the officer and Belton were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Belton was charged with third-degree menacing, second-degree assault and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
