NEW HAVEN, CT — It's "100 percent anonymous," police say, and cash is paid for firearms at a gun buyback set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the New Haven Police Training Academy, 710 Sherman Parkway.
New Haven police and the city have partnered with Swords to Plowshares Northeast to hold the gun buyback, "In the spirit of public safety and prevention to make our homes and community safer.
People can "dispose of unwanted and unsecured guns anonymously and safely in exchange for cash," police say.
"The goal is to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands, such as those of children, suicidal people, perpetrators of domestic violence, and criminals," according to police spokesperson Scott Shumway.
The event is also designed to "promote gun safety and safe storage for gun owners who want to keep their guns but seek to better secure their weapons." Free gun locks will be available and a "very limited number of car safes" will be provided at the event.
"The gun buyback is 100 percent anonymous, no questions asked, and it will take place in a safe and secure location," police said.
Guns must be delivered unloaded in clear plastic bags, and any ammunition must be delivered in a separate bag. The person dropping off the gun will not be charged with illegal possession of that specific firearm.
The payouts will be as followed:
Rifles, Shotguns or Derringer-type guns- $50 Handguns (Revolvers & Pistols)- $150 Ghost Guns, Assault Rifles, and Sawed-Off Shotguns- $250 B.B. Guns- $10
