Former US House Candidate Now Pursuing Texas Comptroller Bid

KATY, TX — A Katy man who previously announced his candidacy for the new District 22 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives is dropping that bid and instead running for Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Angel Luis Vega announced his intentions to drop his bid for Congress last week on his campaign's Facebook page and will run for office as a Democrat. Republican Glenn Hegar has held the office of Texas Comptroller since 2015. "After careful consideration, I decided to change the office that I was seeking," Vega said in the post. "I'm no longer a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives. Instead, I filed to run for a statewide office where I believe I can make a powerful contribution and a strong impact." If voters put him in charge of Texas' finances, Vega said he will prioritize efficiency and transparency in managing the state's accounts, and he vowed to make decisions backed by data and not by affiliation. "I want to make sure that the decisions we make are for the best interest of the people of Texas, not the special interest groups," Vega said in his post. Vega, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is an author and leadership coach who has experience working with nonprofit organizations and political campaigns. Most recently, he held a leadership position in the nonprofit Mi Familia Vota, helping with initiatives for voter and community outreach. He volunteered for President Obama's campaign and has helped with several congressional and gubernatorial campaigns.
