OSWEGO, IL — A beloved lunch supervisor at The Wheatlands Elementary School may have worked her final day before retirement on Nov. 19, but her impact on the community will not be forgotten. Now, her final day at the grade school in Aurora is officially known as "Miss Kathy Day." Kathy Armstrong worked as a lunch supervisor at The Wheatlands for 20 years before she decided to retire. To honor her, Alderman Edward Bugg recognized her as a community hero and eponymously proclaimed her last day at The Wheatlands on Monday. After the now-retired lunch supervisor accepted the proclamation, she told students gathered in the cafeteria that they can become anything they want and reminded them to "always be kind to each other, work hard, stay in school," Theresa Komitas, director of communications and public relations at the Oswego School District 308, wrote in a news release. "Her service and genuine care she had for not only the students but also the community extended far beyond the lunchroom," Komitas said. "She would walk snacks and breakfast down to students who she knew may have arrived late and needed to eat, she would check-in with students frequently about their day and weekend, and she would always make sure students weren't hungry!" District officials said they're proud to have had Armstrong as part of The Wheatlands team for so long. "She will be missed!" the release said.
