Press release from St. Louis Science Center: December 06, 2021 The closest star to the Earth is the Sun which on average is 93 million miles away. The closest star to the Sun is Proxima Centauri. This red dwarf star is about 4.2 light years away. The most distant star ever observed is MACS J1149+2223 Lensed Star 1, nicknamed Icarus which is roughly 9 billion light years away.
