ELMHURST, IL — Some Elmhurst residents dislike all the new apartment development downtown. But city leaders say it's one of the keys to a vibrant community. On Monday, the developer of an eight-story apartment building at 183 N. Addison Ave. announced the project's completion. The Fynn, owned by Lennar Corp., consists of 212 apartments. The City Council approved the project in 2019. In a news release, the project's design firm, BKV Group, said it was able to reduce the building's perceived density through an addition of a second-level courtyard for more space along Addison Avenue. Mayor Scott Levin praised the project. "There has been a great desire among our residents to bring more urban living options to the Elmhurst area," he said in the news release. "With its proximity to neighborhood attractions, restaurants, the Metra station, and quick access to I-290 and I-294, The Fynn fits the bill in so many ways and will serve as a centerpiece of our downtown core for years to come." The building includes "upscale amenities" in the "heart of this commuter-friendly" suburb, one of the designers said. "We intentionally activated the street frontage with a coworking space, fitness room and bike lounge, and pedestrians are able to peer into the large glass storefront windows to view the lobby's unique 5-foot-high fire feature and floor-to-ceiling wood-slatted coworking booths," Chelsey Orlowski, interior designer of the project, said in the release. For years, city leaders have encouraged condo and apartment development downtown. They say this adds vibrancy to an area that would otherwise suffer from the increase in online retailing. Opponents, however, say such development is changing the character of Elmhurst. Last month, the city's zoning commission recommended the proposal for a 200-unit, six-story apartment complex at Haven Road and First Street. The City Council has yet to vote on it.
