BATAVIA, IL — A selection of 100 photographs by local students will be celebrated at a Batavia Fine Arts Centre reception Wednesday. The reception, taking place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., is the culmination of a 10-week photography contest open to high school students throughout Kane County. Each week starting in September, staff from three organizations — the Kane County Regional Office of Education, Kane Excellence in Education Partnership and Kane County Connects — chose 10 winners whose photos then were published in a Kane County Connects article. Over the contest period, almost 2,000 photographs were submitted by students and teachers from across the county. A record-breaking 314 submissions were made in the first week alone, according to Kane County Connects. The works of art — spanning categories including nature, architecture, still life, perspective, texture, use of light, portraits, holiday, photo manipulation and artist's choice — will be showcased in a free exhibition, located at 1250 W. Wilson St., open to the public. The Office of Education keeps a framed copy of each photo to show in a rotating display throughout the year. First-place photos from each week will be printed on canvas, while the other nine from each theme will be printed on photo paper and matted. The ROE keeps a framed copy of each photo to show in a rotating display throughout the year, according to reports from Shaw Local. Guests can celebrate the achievements with refreshments, music, and live music, according to the ROE. An award ceremony, where artists will be presented with trophies, will start at 7 p.m. "We want to thank our students and teachers for participating in this year's photo contest," the Kane County ROE said in a statement. "The amount of creativity shown is nothing short of incredible, which is why we need to celebrate!" A collection of weekly articles that featured the photographs can be found through Kane County Connects.
