Can you imagine what the greater Detroit region might have looked like prior to Detroit? The untainted waters of the Great Lakes, the islands ecosystems, and river deltas? It would be unrecognizable, the ecology abundant and diverse. It's hard to feel connection to the land here now. But we cannot forget that connection still exists...even if we've attempted to mute it. The western states are in periods of devastating drought. Forests are burning. The climate is changing. This is not a regional problem. This is a global problem. We are all on the same blue orb spinning around in space. We all need to learn to look back to Nature, to reconnect with Her, and learn what we can do to begin correcting our errors. Few people understand just how critical of a role the beaver played in our continent's original ecosystem. Nor do they understand how effectual their species can be at mitigating fire and raising the water table. This is a brief synopsis of how we've impacted beaver and thereby impacted ourselves, along with a 10min PBS mini-documentary about beaver and watershed restoration.
