The Albany Distilling Company is an award-winning distillery located in the historic downtown of New York's capital city. Since 2011, it's been using traditional recipes and modern methods to produce spirits of exceptional quality one small batch at a time. The Albany Distilling Company, located in the heart of Albany’s growing “Warehouse District,” has won national awards for its spirits (from the American Crafts Spirits Association and the American Distilling Institute) and local awards for preservation (the Historic Albany Foundation). Its products have been featured in Food & Wine Magazine, Wine Enthusiast, and Artisan Spirits Magazine, as well as on the Today Show and CBS This Morning. Since it was founded in 2011, it has sold over 150,000 bottles to customers, with distribution in New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Quebec. Its products include rum and brandy as well as several varieties of both whiskey and vodka, including a collaborative vodka produced with the Death Wish Coffee Company. John CurtinBefore opening Albany Distilling, John was, among other things, a bartender, a high school English teacher, a pencil pusher at GE, and a cartoonist for an Irish magazine. He spent most of 2011 finishing his master’s degree in library science and slogging through paperwork for licenses and permits; in the meantime, he visited farms, chased down barrels, sourced glassware, and learned how to make spirits from other distillers (and plenty of trial and error, with an emphasis on error). The release of Albany Distilling’s first whiskey in 2012 closed a 92-year gap in Albany’s long and storied history of (legal) spirits production. Since then, John has helped to get two laws passed to enable farm distilleries to sell merchandise and serve beer, wine, and cider by the glass. He currently teaches distilling at Schenectady County Community College and sits on the board of both the New York State Distillers Guild, where he serves as vice-president, and the Capital Craft Beverage Trail, where he serves as president. Rick SicariRick is a brewer turned distiller. After three years of home brewing in college, he got his professional start on the packaging line at Olde Saratoga Brewing Company in 2009 while interning in their 100 BBL brew house. Knowing that owning and operating his own facility was the ultimate goal, he left the brewery after a year and headed to southern Sweden where he earned a Master in Managerial Accounting at Lund University, writing his thesis on the financial operations of Brewpub Copenhagen. After graduation, his education continued as he enrolled in The World Brewing Academy (WBA) at the joint campuses of both Siebel Institute (Chicago) and Doemens Academy (Munich, Germany) where he fine-tuned his skills on the more technical side of brewing. Upon his return to the States, he met John Curtin who enlightened him to the growth and potential of the craft distilling industry. After less than a week, their partnership was formed.
