Description

Our bold and rebellious American Imperial Stout makes its return December 18th. Pre-order yours now and drink in the history. In search of something with substance? Brewed with nearly a dozen different dark and specialty malts, flaked oats and wheat, fermented with a blend of yeasts, and finally rested on French oak spirals that have been getting cozy with some rum, the 2021 edition of Nola is bold and complex. Deep, roasty dark fruit, vanilla and coffee elements intertwine on this dark American Imperial Stout with an off-dry finish and enigmatic hop character. We brew Nola to be as rich and robust as the history that inspired it, and release it every year on December 18th, the anniversary of its namesake's fateful demise. Armor plated, with a hold that could carry 800 cases of liquor, the Prohibition rumrunner Nola was owned and captained by our great-great-great-uncle, Frank Butler. Lore spread through the Cape and Islands as Frank routinely evaded the Coast Guard with his hauls. As his shipments and wealth grew, so did his reputation and the inherent risk. On the fateful night of December 18th, 1931, Frank’s luck ran out. Three patrol boats and a destroyer attempted to intercept Nola off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. Machine gun fire struck and ignited excess cargo that had been boldly stacked on the deck and, within minutes, Nola was no more. What became of Frank Butler and his crew? Come hear the full tale of Frank's exploits at the Tilton Brothers taproom on Saturday, December 18th, and raise a glass to his rebellious spirit!
