Description
Hardscape cleaning is the process of cleaning and maintaining your hardscape. This can involve anything from removing moss and algae growth to washing away white stains (also known as efflorescence ). It is a necessary step in keeping your hardscape looking its best. Identify the Problem The first step in hardscape clearing is identifying the problem. This can be done through visual inspection or by taking samples of the affected areas. Once the problem is identified, the appropriate solution can be applied. For example, if there is moss growth on your pavers or walls, you will need to remove it with a brush or pressure washer. If there is efflorescence on your pavers, you will need to wash it away with water. Joint Re-Sanding If you are experiencing failed joint sand which can be identified by weeds moss and ant hills in your cracks than you can add some new high-performing polymeric joint sand and sweep it into all the joints. Then you moisten the newly added sand to activate polymers (also called polymerization). Stain Prevention - Sealing It's not advised to do any re-sealing before two years after the date of original sealing. However, it's a good idea to re-seal your driveway or patio every three to five years after that, depending on usage and wear, to make it last as long as possible. Cleaning Your Pavers When you are trying to remove moss or dirt from your pavers, it is important to use the correct method. There are two methods: using a pressure washer and using chemical cleaners. Pressure Washers If you choose to use a pressure washer, there are three things that must be kept in mind. First, never point the direct stream at the surface of your paver. This can cause damage to the material. Second, always use a medium-pressure spray (not low pressure and not extremely high pressure). Finally, never use bleach or any other type of cleaner that contains chlorine on your pavers. These cleaners will break down the materials in your paver over time, eventually causing discoloration and cracks. Chemical Cleaners If you choose to use chemical cleaners instead of a pressure washer, there are two points you should keep in mind. First, be sure to purchase an appropriate cleaner made specifically for cleaning outdoor surfaces. And second, never apply the cleaner without first diluting it with water 50/50 .
