SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — A Nokomis child has minor injuries after being hit by an SUV while he was riding his bicycle Monday morning, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release. Around 8 a.m., the SUV, driven by a 71-year-old Nokomis woman, was traveling south on Sorrento Woods Boulevard and approaching the stop sign at the Laurel Road intersection. At the same time, the 10-year-old boy was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk, heading south toward Sorrento Woods Boulevard. The SUV pulled forward into the crosswalk, hitting the child, FHP said. The boy fell off his bike onto the road within the crosswalk area. He was brought to Sarasota Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. His mother was notified of the crash and went to the hospital with him. The driver was issued a traffic citation for violation of right of way, FHP said.
