LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — A scammer cloned a Virginia State Police phone number to trick unsuspecting residents, according to a report from Virginia State Police. Authorities are warning residents to be vigilant about phone scams, even if they come from seemingly trustworthy sources. On Friday, three people reported the scam to Virginia State Police officials. Each caller reported a similar scam; they received a phone call from someone claiming to represent state police. The scammer told them there was an outstanding warrant for them and Virginia State Police required payment. One of the people who reported the scam complied with the demands and lost money, state police said. The scammer, who identified themselves as Trooper or Sergeant Johnson, cloned the phone number of Virginia State Police's Leesburg office. "No law enforcement agency will call a person to say he/she is under arrest, has an outstanding warrant, and/or owes money," Virginia State Police said in a report. "If anyone receives this call, hang up. It's a scam. " Law enforcement officials reminded residents that police departments never contact them by phone to request payment or clear arrest warrants. Law enforcement will also not require payment through gift cards. Scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission online or by calling 1-877-382-4357.
