GROUNDS-MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST Kitsap Regional Library is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to provide superior grounds and maintenance services at several Kitsap Regional Library locations. This position is responsible for general landscape design and maintenance as well as building projects to include but not limited to electrical, carpentry, plumbing, or painting. This position reports to the Facilities Supervisor. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of physical labor activities in maintaining buildings, grounds and related equipment for Kitsap Regional Library. Typical duties include: weeding, pruning, fertilizing, irrigating and applying herbicide and insecticide sprays or other chemical controls to facility grounds. Responsible for performing electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting and remodeling tasks safely, utilizing appropriate hand and power tools and maintaining or repairing other structures such as benches, gates, retaining walls, walkways, gutters or downspouts. Also responsible for maintaining associated equipment such as hand tools, small power tools, tractors, weed-eaters, blowers, chainsaws and snow removal equipment. Work is performed with the ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making within established policies, procedures and guidelines. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific tasks an incumbent may be expected to perform. DUTIES: Maintain landscaping and design using appropriate power tools safely. Prune and spray using chemicals and non-chemical substances within established guidelines. Rake, weed, plant and irrigate library grounds. Inspect for and remove litter. Repair, replace and/or maintain sprinkler system as needed. May repair fences, gates, walls or walkways. Maintain building gutters and downspouts as needed. Maintain and repair hand and power tools as needed. Assist with building projects that may include electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, or remodeling. Safely use appropriate power tools as needed. Replace lamps and ballasts. Will perform periodic maintenance routines to maintain building and grounds cleanliness and durability. Will use appropriate products and equipment to safely clean and degrease concrete garage floors. May on occasion handle and safely dispose of bio-hazardous materials. Maintain the facility walkways for safety during icy weather. Remove and replace skylight covers seasonally. Assist with moving furniture and set up for library-sponsored activities. Transport boxes to and from storage. Assist with moving equipment and other library materials as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance. Knowledge of seasonal maintenance and pruning requirements. Ability to establish priorities for grounds work. Knowledge of safe handling of herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals used for maintaining plant life. Ability to learn and operate light and medium industrial equipment for use in landscaping and grounds keeping such as mowers, tractors, bobcats, chainsaws, hedge trimmers and line trimmers. Ability to perform routine electrical, plumbing, mechanical and structural repairs/maintenance and to practice appropriate safety procedures. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and vendors and to interact courteously with the public. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to read and comprehend technical and safety instructions, warnings and other written materials. Ability to operate standard office equipment, perform required data entry proficiently and utilize computer software and specialized programs. Ability to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations directly related to the work being performed. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a staff member to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is required to: (CONTINUOUS) seeing, talking, hearing, grasping, handling and manual dexterity. (OCCASIONAL) crawling, climbing and balancing. Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 30 pounds regularly and, occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds. Requires the ability to push, pull and maneuver objects. Requires the skill and ability to use small hand tools and power equipment safely. Ability to maintain confidentiality in dealing with patron and/or employee records. SCHEDULE This is a non-exempt full-time position scheduled for 40 hours per week. The schedule will be determined by the supervisor upon hire and may include early mornings, evenings and weekends. Please note that schedules are subject to change to meet the needs of the library. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED, plus three years' experience in building and grounds maintenance. Kitsap Regional Library is a member of the Washington Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Compensation range begins at $18.93-24.70 per hour DOE.
