CALIFORNIA — Macy's announced in November that it will close 10 stores nationwide in January, according to CNBC. These 10 stores were part of the 125 Macy's stores the company announced it planned to shutter by 2023; 65 have already shuttered. Macy's closed two stores in California in 2021: Richmond and El Cajon. The remaining California stores have the added pressure of dealing with organized retail thefts. Authorities believed that sophisticated criminal networks could be to blame for a recent string of smash-and-grab crimes, which have left some shoppers and retail employees afraid to return to the locations.
