ATLANTA, GA — The Atlanta School Board on Monday is expected to vote to oppose Buckhead cityhood. As part of the board's stated legislative priorities for 2022, blocking legislation to de-annex Buckhead from Atlanta and form a new city was identified as an agenda item for when the board holds its December meeting Monday at 2:30 p.m. A fiscal analysis of the cost of Buckhead leaving Atlanta showed that such a move would cost Atlanta Public Schools about $332 million each year. Sponsored by the Committee for a United Atlanta, the organization leading the opposition to proposed secession, the analysis also showed the proposed split could cost the City of Atlanta $252 million in annual tax revenue and foul up long-standing bonding obligations held by the city. The Buckhead opposition line item is one of five points of the school board's agenda item calling to "protect Atlanta Public Schools property tax base to support quality instruction for all students." The Buckhead City Committee evolved earlier this year from a study group to actively lobby for the legislation that will put the question of whether to stay or go to Buckhead voters in November. Late last month, lawmakers prefiled Senate Bill 324 to go before the Georgia General Assembly when the session opens in January.
