Here are the top stories today in Roanoke: Residents will once again be able to ring in the new year at Roanoke's Big Lick New Year's Eve countdown celebration. The massive downtown festival will be held at Roanoke's Market Square Plaza, Center in the Square, and the historic Roanoke City Market Building from 8:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Those planning to attend can look forward to events such as live music, gaming, cocktails, food, and a "Roanoke Star Rise at Midnight." Ovr 1,000 people across Virginia were hospitalized as of Friday with confirmed or test-pending cases of COVID-19; 74,421 COVID patients have been released from hospitals across the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Nearly 75 percent of Virginians have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, with 65.4 percent being fully vaccinated.
