WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs just saw its highest weekly total of new coronavirus cases since early January, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, the village had experienced 1,742 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 43 new cases in the last week. The week before last, the village saw 35 new cases. For four weeks in June and July, the village's coronavirus case count did not budge. In early January, Western Springs saw a weekly total of 43 new cases. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at six. The latest deaths were reported May 31 and May 11, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. The figure compares to 103 in Darien, 117 in Hinsdale and DuPage County, 120 in La Grange Park, 121 in Elmhurst, 126 in Clarendon Hills, 127 in suburban Cook County and 128 in La Grange. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,835,076, a 2.9 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 26,535. Nationally, 48.9 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 2.1 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 784,893 people have died from the virus in the United States.
