NORTHAMPTON, NY — A man was airlifted after a fiery crash in Northampton Saturday, police said.
According to Southampton Town Police, the one-car crash took place on Country Road 51 near the Hampton Hills golf course when a driver, who was headed north toward Riverhead, lost control of his vehicle and careened across the median, colliding with a tree on the opposite side of the roadway.
The vehicle then burst into flames with the man trapped inside, police said.
New York State Police, along with a good Samaritan, were able to douse the flames using fire extinguishers, police said.
Mastic Ambulance, while passing through the area, stopped to help the driver; the Riverhead Fire Department along with the Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded, police said.
The man was extricated from the vehicle by Riverhead Fire Department heavy rescue and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police helicopter with what are believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Southampton Town detectives remained at the scene investigating the cause of the crash, police said.
