Looking for a fun, easy invertebrate pet? Easy low maintenance pet for a kid? Isopods (aka Rolly Pollies or Curl-Up Bugs) are fun animals to keep. They are a great addition to a terrarium or bioactive vivarium as a clean-up crew. They clean up food scrap and droppings from other terrarium inhabitants (like hissing cockroaches, reptiles, or amphibians). Dairy cows (named for their adorable black & white spots) are an excellent choice for a first time hobbyist. They breed fast & are really hardy. Set-up is easy: just a plastic box with a mix of organic compost, hardwood pellets, moss, & dried leaf litter and they’ll take off! When set up correctly you’ll only need to feed once or twice weekly and mist occasionally. Since they are detritivores (little composting machines) you almost never need to clean out their enclosures. Think yearly or less!! Seriously, they couldn’t be simpler. A great choice for a kids pet or science project! Already keep exotic pets?
