CALABASAS, CA — The City of Calabasas accepted a $159,207 grant from the ca Department of Justice to enforce regulations on tobacco sales. The funding will go help the city enforce registration requirements for tobacco sellers and will attempt to decrease illegal sales of tobacco products to individuals under 21 years old. The Calabasas municipal code calls for three sting operations a year to enforce tobacco sale regulations with the LASD. The grant will allow the city to increase to six sting operations a year for three years, according to the agenda report on the grant. 23.6 percent of high school students and 6.7 percent of middle school students used a tobacco product in 2020, according to the Center for Disease Control. "This grant [will] greatly help our community and teens in our city," said LASD sheriff Alex Villanueva in a letter to the city.
