TUSCALOOSA, AL — Shelton State Community College has landed some more local talent as its latest baseball commitment for 2023. Click here to subscribe to our free Tuscaloosa Daily newsletter and breaking news alerts Northridge High senior Whitt Winfield — a 6'2", 205-pound catcher — announced his commitment to sign with the Bucs baseball program and Coach Bobby Sprowl on Friday. The two-sport star, who also shined on the gridiron as a quarterback for the Jaguars football team in his senior season after transferring from Tuscaloosa Academy, told Patch that he chose Shelton State because of his relationship with the coaching staff, in addition to the belief that the program will give him the best opportunity to develop as an athlete. Initially committed to play baseball for the UAB Blazers, Winfield opted against signing on with the Division-I program following a head coaching change over the summer. He is the son of Zane and Kathy Winfield. Winfield then cited his parents as guiding forces, especially considering his father also played baseball at Shelton State. "My mom Kathy Winfield has been the person that had guided me through my college selection since I was a freshman," Winfield said. He went on to say that he hopes to play catcher for two years at Shelton State before taking his career further. In the classroom, Winfield plans on majoring in communications, with the goal of one day becoming a coach once his playing days are over.
