Hey, people of Atlanta! It's me again, Kathy Cioffi, your host of the Atlanta Daily. First, today's weather: Mild with partial sunshine. High: 70 Low: 57. Here are the top stories in Atlanta today: For the seventh straight time, No. 3 Alabama beat No. 1 Georgia Saturday, winning the 2021 SEC Championship Game 41-24 in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. With its season on the line, the victory gave the Crimson Tide its seventh SEC title in the last 10 seasons and delivered the first loss of the season to Georgia. The only question that remains is if one - or both - teams will make the College Football Playoff, a decision that will be made this afternoon when the CFP Selection Committee announces the four-team field. (CBSsports.com) A woman from Georgia has tested positive for the COVID omicron variant, according to health officials. The Georgia Department of Public Health said the woman "recently traveled from South Africa and was in Georgia for two days before traveling on to New Jersey where the testing and sequencing were done." The woman, who was fully vaccinated, is isolating in New Jersey after experiencing moderate symptoms for which she received care in a North Jersey emergency department, according to the New Jersey Department of Health. Contact tracing is underway in New Jersey and in Georgia to identify close contacts at risk of infection, DPH said. No additional omicron cases in Georgia have been identified so far. (Atlanta Patch) An 18-year-old college student from metro Atlanta was shot and killed by police at the Florida Institute of Technology Friday night, Florida authorities reported. Melbourne, Fla., police said Alhaji Sow, from Riverdale, was confronted by officers and campus security at the Florida school where he was a sophomore after reports that he was "armed with a knife and assaulting students." Sow, who was studying aeronautical science, was later described in a police department's release later as armed with an unspecified "edged weapon." T. Dwayne McCay, the school's president, said his "heart goes out to everyone in pain." (11Alive.com WXIA)A food truck belonging to Creole Orleans Catering Company was stolen from the Greenbriar Mall parking lot around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the southwest Atlanta catering company owners are asking the public for help. "We can't afford a hit like this," said co-owner Marzell Byrd. "We are just a mom-and-pop business." And catering events with the food truck is their main source of income. Atlanta police are investigating, aided by video of a light-colored pickup backing up, hitching the food truck to the vehicle and driving away that was posted on social media. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the food truck and/or the suspects who took it. (WSB Atlanta)From the department of bizarre coincidences: The last three individuals elected mayor of Atlanta had mothers named "Sylvia." Keisha Lance-Bottoms, Atlanta's current mayor, shared the unusual connection between former mayor Kasim Reed, herself and mayor-elect Andre Dickens by retweeting a post from Skip Mason's Vanishing Black Atlanta History that read, "If your mother's name is not Sylvia, you can't be mayor of Atlanta."
