Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, a nonprofit rehabilitation-focused healthcare system headquartered in Wallingford, presented its quarterly DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses to Makayla Hugo, BSN, RN. The Wallingford resident was nominated by her colleagues who described her as "always positive, even under the most challenging circumstances." "Makayla treats her patients like family," wrote her supervisor Nicole Morrill, MSN, BSN, RN, Lyman 1 nurse manager. "Her compassionate care and desire to motivate others coupled with her desire to learn and challenge herself is admirable. Makayla welcomes more responsibility, leadership experience and opportunities to share her knowledge," she said. "She plays an important role in our Shared Governance Nursing Professional Council and her ideas have sparked incredible changes within our department." Hugo began her Gaylord career in 2015 as a mobility technician and, later, patient care technician. She explained that working side-by-side with Gaylord's nursing team inspired her to pursue her nursing degree. "Gaylord is a rewarding place to work because patients come in at their rock bottom after a catastrophic illness or injury. I have the opportunity to contribute to their healing process so that they are able to participate in the therapies that will return them to their families and their lives," she said. "To see our patients' progress from admission to discharge motivates me to be the best nurse I can be." About the DAISY Award: The international award was created by the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died from an autoimmune disease in 1999. Appreciative of the clinical skills, caring, and compassion exhibited by each of the nurses who cared for Patrick, the Barnes family created the international award and foundation to say 'thank you' to nurses throughout the world.
