Position: Laborer Location: Union City, CA Salary: $20.57, after 30 days of employment $22.86 Position is part of a cross-trained team which is responsible for the manufacturing of ductile iron pipe from molten metal. On any shift, a Production Laborer may perform any of the following job duties, as determined by supervisory and/or team decision, or may perform other related duties required. • Perform all duties required to cast and process ductile iron pipe from molten metal: • Processes include but are not limited to: transfer molten metal from furnace to ladle and ladle to machine. • Operate casting machine; clean and prepare trough for casting cycle and maintain continuity of production • Inspect finished pipe for defects, annealing pipe in oven, operating forklifts, cranes and transfer pipe to transport • package load and unload pipe or molten metal, recording pipe information • inspecting pipe for quality, cutting, grinding and testing pipe, rounding pipe, gauging pipe, rolling pipe, lining pipe, weighing and mixing cement, painting pipe, patching and repairing pipe linings, cleaning pipe and labeling pipe Skills and Requirements 1. Transfers molten metal from holding furnace to machine. 2. Cleans and prepares trough by removing foreign material and coats and maintains trough and trough chute making refractory repairs to trough and chute as required. 3. Maintains material supplies for work area (blacking, refractory, paint, cement, etc.) 4. Operates production machinery to produce good quality pipe. 5. Visually inspects core, places core on core setter, visually inspects mold for presence of foreign material, checks for proper alignment of trough in casting machine. 6. Operates pipe pullers to extract pipe; visually inspects pipe for defects; removes broken pipe from machine when necessary. 7. Transfers pipe from Casting to annealing ovens and processes pipe through the ovens in accordance with written procedures and oral instructions. 8. Tests pipe for ductility and pressure. 9. Transports pipe to next workstation or to packaging area. 10. Records pipe identification information and/or enters information into computer. Places labels on pipe as required. 11. Inspects pipe for quality as it progresses through processing stations. 12. Mixes cement and applies to pipe as lining. 13. Paints, grinds, washes, touches up pipe. 14. Packages pipe into bundles. 15. Keeps work area in clean and orderly condition and performs all work in accordance with plant and safety rules.
