Description

Press release from Western Kentucky University: December 2, 2021 As students advance in the Spanish Program, they learn to communicate in Spanish about topics relevant to their future careers and our society, in general. As the culmination of every fall semester's work, students in Dr. Melissa Stewart's Advanced Oral Spanish class (SPAN 470/G) participate in debates on contemporary issues. This activity allows students to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the semester. The students choose topics, organize research on different points, prepare rebuttals, and practice crafting arguments. Spanish Program The purpose of this course is to strengthen students' vocabulary and speaking. This semester students considered whether university studies should be free and available to all and the pros and cons of requiring COVID vaccinations in businesses, schools, and other public venues. On Monday, SPAN 470 students had more of an audience than just their peers. Students from Dr. Inma Pertusa's Spanish Composition and Grammar (SPAN 371) class joined them. This provided SPAN 371 students a glimpse of what they will one day be doing as they advance in the program, and the opportunity allowed them to pick up pointers to use in their own final argumentative essays.
