Here are the top stories today in San Diego: A judge denied a temporary restraining order request Thursday from local parents group Let Them Choose to block the San Diego Unified School District's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, though another hearing was scheduled for later this month to revisit the issue. The group is seeking to suspend enforcement of the district's vaccine policy prior to Dec. 20, when all students over age 16 must receive their second vaccine dose. (City News Service)Eight people were taken into custody Thursday in connection with violence that broke out during dueling demonstrations in Pacific Beach on the part of supporters and opponents of then-President Donald Trump. The arrestees, whose names were not immediately available, allegedly carried out a total of eight attacks during the fracas, victimizing 16 people, according to a San Diego Police Department statement released Thursday night. A ninth suspect remains at large. (City News Service)A San Diego Central Jail inmate died from combined fentanyl and methamphetamine toxicity, according to the autopsy report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office released this week. The death of Saxon Fredrick Rodriguez was ruled to be an accident, said San Diego County Sheriff's Department Lt. Thomas Seiver. (City News Service)Authorities Thursday were still looking for a suspect in a 2003 cold case death in San Diego. On Nov. 16, 2003, police found 25-year-old Salvador Mercado with stab wounds at a house party on the 800 block of Harris Avenue, according to San Diego Police Officer Mark Herring. Mercado was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries. Investigators continue to look for witnesses as they attempt to solve the case.
