Former Nurse Gets 10 Years For Raping, Impregnating Patient

PHOENIX, AZ — A man who was convicted of raping an intellectually disabled woman he was supposed to be caring for was sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to a report from ABC 15. Nathan Sutherland pleaded guilty on Sept. 2 to charges of sexual assault and abuse of a vulnerable adult, according to court records. He was sentenced Thursday. In addition to the 10 years in prison, Sutherland will have to register as a sex offender and will be on probation for life, according to Fox 10. Sutherland was initially charged in 2019, after DNA evidence revealed that he was the father of a child born to a patient at Hacienda Healthcare, an intermediate care facility. All of the men who worked at the facility were DNA tested. Workers at the facility didn't know the woman was pregnant until she gave birth in 2018.
