A full-day community conference focused on Cabo Verdean women held biennially in Providence, RI. This conference welcomes everyone! Since 2016, the Poderoza Conference has taken place at Providence College with an audience of over 250 participants, including members of as well as allies and advocates of the Cabo Verdean community from across the United States, Canada, Europe and Cabo Verde. The conference addresses the need for focused discourse on issues of importance to women and offers a safe space for Cabo Verdean women’s voices to be heard. Sessions celebrate our accomplishments and address the unique set of issues we face in the areas of immigration status, self-image, health (physical and mental), education, professional development, domestic violence, community building, activism and beyond. Our goal is to create a supportive and empowering network of Cabo Verdean women, particularly young women and girls, in seeing themselves as capable of achieving all of their hopes and dreams. FAQs Will there be adjustments to the Conference due to the COVID19 pandemic? Yes. We are currently planning those details and will make them available as soon as possible. Our main priority is the safety and health of our communities. Please check back with us periodically for updates and social distancing protocols for the day of the Conference. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? Providence College students, faculty and staff as well as participants 60 years of age and older, High school and college students must present current ID at the registration table to receive the conference discount. Although the conference is open to anyone, the suggested minimum age of attendees is 13 years and older. What is included in my registration cost? The registration cost covers a welcome packet (printed program schedule, pen and notepad), continental breakfast, lunch, and unlimited beverages (coffee, tea, water), access to all workshops and vendor tables. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There will be free parking available at the Anderson Garage, located in the Providence College campus. Dr. TERZA ALICE SILVA LIMA-NEVES is a Kriola, wife, mother, educator and advocate for women and girls. She was born and raised in Sao Vicente Island, Cabo Verde. As a teenager, Terza immigrated to Pawtucket, RI with her parents and two younger sisters. Dr. Lima-Neves is associate professor of political science at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She received her B.A. from Providence College and M.A./Ph.D. in political science from Clark Atlanta University. She teaches courses on African, comparative and international politics. Her research interests and published scholarship focus on Cabo Verdean gender studies, modern African diaspora politics as well as African women and development. She's particularly interested in Cabo Verdean women’s empowerment as well as the politics of gender and community building in the Cabo Verdean community in the United States. Terza is the founding president of the Cape Verdeans of the Carolinas Association and is active in local organizations that promote the empowerment of women and girls. She lives in Charlotte with her husband, Luis and their children. A graduate of Duke University and Rutgers University, she is currently affiliated with UMass Boston, and the Pedro Pires Institute for Cape Verdean Studies at Bridgewater State University. Her areas of research include late 19th and 20th century African-American history, African-American women’s history, African Diaspora studies, Cabo Verdean studies, critical education research and critical hip hop studies. She is a community organizer/activist, working on matters related to children, youth/gang violence, the school to prison pipeline, immigrant transitions, women’s empowerment, and Cabo Verdean community concerns. She is an advocate of teaching using civic engagement and has empowered many students to make a difference in this field. She is the founder of the HIPHOP Initiative, MEMORIA Oral History Project, and the co-founder of SABURA Youth Program in Brockton, MA.
