Connected Science 22 is a two day conference for K-12 science educators. We convene at Hazelwood West High School, on July 12th and 13th, 2022 with a keynote and breakout presentations from Jim Clark and Samantha Johnson of Next Generation Science Innovations; Dr. Sharon Bennett Delesbore, President of the Association of Multicultural Science Education; and Dr. Patrick Brown, author of the Instructional Sequence Matters series. The conference will offer a keynote and three 75 minute breakout sessions on Tuesday, July 12th, and a keynote, a lunch and learn, and three 75 minute breakout sessions on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022. Breakout sessions will offer opportunities to continue to learn with the keynote presenters or to choose from a variety of other sessions with local science leaders and educators. Featured Speakers Jim Clark was the district science coordinator for San Lorenzo Unified School District in California where he was responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). He taught Biology, AP Biology and Honors Anatomy and Physiology at Arroyo High School in the San Lorenzo Unified School District for 32 years. Jim also served as curriculum and classroom specialist for the Knowles Science Teachers’ Foundation. Jim is currently on the writing team for CA state NGSS roll outs. He is also working with Howard Hughes Medical Institute on curriculum development and delivering professional development workshops. Among many other achievements, Jim has received international recognition for his work around growth mindset and classroom culture through KQED Mindshift. Jim is also the co-founder of Next Generation Science Innovations (NGSI) a partnership designed to provide professional development to school districts as they move toward full implementation of the NGSS. NGSI has been recognized for its work in equitable teaching and grading strategies. Samantha Johnson is currently a full time Living Earth and AP Biology teacher at Arroyo High School in the San Lorenzo Unified School District. Additionally, she is the co-lead teacher for a small learning community, the Academy of Health and Medicine, which involves supporting students through cross-curricular strategies for equitable and inclusive classrooms as well as vertical alignment of academy-wide “deep skills.” Samantha is also responsible for planning and implementing academy wide professional development. Samantha is currently on the writing team for California state NGSS roll outs, having just finished co-writing the secondary science text session with Jim. She works with Howard Hughes Medical Institute BioInteractive on writing curriculum and developing professional learning for teachers. Samantha is also the co-founder of Next Generation Science Innovations (NGSI) a partnership designed to provide professional development to school districts as they move toward full implementation of the NGSS. NGSI has been recognized for its work in equitable teaching, grading strategies, and inclusive classrooms. Sharon Delesbore (“Dr. D”) is president of the Association for Multicultural Science Education (AMSE) and founder of Science Mama Enterprise. As a 20-year secondary school administrator, science instructional specialist, and middle school science teacher, Dr. D. has never lost her spirit of advocacy for equitable science instruction for all students of color, multicultural backgrounds, and varying economic status and opportunities. Her leadership within AMSE helps to provide educators with opportunities to present sessions at NSTA’s conferences, focusing on topics of equity, diversity, inclusion, and access for all students desiring to learn about science. Patrick (Pat) Brown, PhD brings a wealth of experience from both a practical and research-based background in both K-5 and 6-12 education. He currently serves as the executive director of STEAM for the Fort Zumwalt School District. Pat is an accomplished writer, having authored five books, including the NSTA bestselling series Instructional Sequence Matters. He has also written more than 50 peer-reviewed articles. His research has been published in leading scholarly journals and he has provided numerous details of the powerful impacts of research-based practices on student learning in pracitionare publications. The combination of Pat’s teaching and research experience has helped him better understand the types of professional learning needed to reach the vision of contemporary educational reform. He has an extensive background in professional development and is a regular speaker at state and national conferences.
