WAUWATOSA, WI—The Wauwatosa Plan Commission will consider a zoning text amendment to add charter schools as a conditional use for a proposed six-classroom charter school focused on innovation in design on Dec. 13. Wisconsin Innovation Academy is proposed for 11811 W. Bluemound Road. "Wisconsin Innovation Academy provides a challenging, high-quality learning experience within a diverse and inclusive, global minded community, and prepares students as innovative thinkers who are curious, collaborative, college-ready, and prepared to excel in a diverse, intercultural world," city document said. The school, if approved, would be launched in fall 2022 with six classrooms. There would be up to 150 students with "open elementary grade levels to be confirmed through parent engagement," city documents said. The plans include creating classroom space from remodeled motel rooms to house WIA students. "WIA's enrollment is then projected to grow by up to 100 students per school year for the next three school years and an additional 50 students for the next school year for a total of up to 500 students over a five-year period," city documents said. The classrooms will be remodeled in phases to allow the increased enrollment, and the elevator will be installed before the second school year.
