NEWTON, MA — Former Rep. Joe Kennedy will not run for governor or attorney general in Massachusetts' 2022 race, according to Politico. Kennedy seemed to be an obvious Democratic candidate after Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito announced that they will not seek re-election. However, Politico's Lisa Kashinsky said Thursday that a close source to Kennedy confirmed that he is not running. Baker and Polio's released their decision in a joint statement Wednesday morning, a decision that is expected to cause a scramble for the next governor. "This was an extremely difficult decision for us," said Baker and Polito. "We love the work and we especially respect and admire the people of this wonderful commonwealth. Serving as the governor and lieutenant governor of Massachusetts has been the most challenging and fulfilling jobs we've ever had." "We will forever be grateful to the people of the state for giving us this honor." As of Thursday, Former Rep. Geoff Diehl is the sole Republican candidate and the major Democratic candidates are Sen. Sonia Chang-Díaz, former Sen. Ben Downing, and Harvard professor Danielle Allen. AG Maura Healy, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, Boston City Councilor Annissa Essaibi George, and Taunton Mayor Shaunna O'Connell are also potential additions to the race.
