NEW YORK CITY — A Brooklyn student took a loaded "ghost gun" and $30,000 in cash into his high school, according to reports. The untraceable weapon confiscated Wednesday — as first reported by the New York Daily News — is part of a recent citywide surge. NYPD officers had confiscated 135 ghost guns as of October. They only recovered 19 such weapons in 2017. Mayor Bill de Blasio recently called them a "scourge" and praised law enforcement and legislative crackdowns. "This is a huge problem," he said. "These are guns that people order from out-of-state. They can assemble them without serial numbers. They're not traceable. It's a huge problem." The latest ghost gun case unfolded in Urban Assembly School of Law and Justice in downtown Brooklyn, according to the Daily News. A secretary spotted the gun in the book bag of a 17-year-old student who showed up late to school, the Daily News reported. NYPD officers arrested the student, confiscated the gun and found $30,000 in cash inside his backpack, according to the report.
