Police Investigating Fire That Displaced 6 In Hamden: Officials

HAMDEN, CT — Police are investigating a fire at a multi-family home that displaced six people, and sent one to the hospital, Thursday morning in Hamden, according to officials. An investigation found that the fire was intentionally set in the kitchen, according to Fire Marshal Brian Dolan. "This is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public," Dolan said. Firefighters responded to a reported fire at a three-family house on Helen Street within two minutes of dispatch around 5:35 a.m., according to Dolan. Arriving crews "stretched a hose line to a third-floor apartment where they encountered a kitchen fire that had spread to the attic," Dolan said. The incident was escalated to a second alarm. Crews worked to extinguish the fire and perform overhaul operations. The fire was declared under control at 6:30 a.m., according to Dolan. Dolan said the occupant of the third floor was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for medical evaluation. The house was declared uninhabitable by the town's building official, according to Dolan. The American Red Cross, Hamden Community Emergency Response Team, and Hamden Community Services provided assistance and lodging for the six displaced residents of the other two apartments, Dolan said.
