SANTA MONICA, CA — Your holiday wishes have been answered, kids, it's time for a new pet. For the entire month of December, animal shelters in Los Angeles County will waive all adoption fees for all dogs and cats that have been at the shelter for 10 days or longer. The waived price includes adoption, a microchip for your pet, spay or neuter charges and vaccinations, according to Los Angeles Animal Care and Control. It typically takes 10-14 days for an animal to be adopted after they are deemed "ready to go home," meaning they have not been claimed as a lost pet and have been spayed or neutered, said Don Belton, public information officer for LA Animal Care and Control. Dogs over 35 pounds also have to be socialized before they are "ready to go home." That being said, there is no limit on how long a dog can stay at the shelter before it is adopted, Belton said. The promotion, dubbed "Home for the Pawlidays," will happen at every shelter in Los Angeles County, including shelters in Baldwin Park, Downey, Palmdale and Carson.
