CONCORD, NH — The Speaker of the House and Democratic Leader issued a joint letter to members of the Legislature on Thursdays condemning recent anti-Semitic social media posts by members of both sides of the aisle. Sherman Packard (R-Londonderry), the speaker of the House, and state Rep. Renny Cushing (D-Hampton), the Democratic leader, said both had been made aware of recent "insensitive and unacceptable" posts by three representatives — two Republicans and a Democrat. Members of the House, they said, should not be "perpetuating hate" in any form. "Whether these individuals knew the content of their posts was anti-Semitic or not, they had the responsibility to research the source of the information, and the context before posting it," they wrote. "As elected officials, it is our duty to our constituents. They deserve to know that we give the same level of examination to information we share on social media as we do to legislation that we act upon on their behalf. In an age where information is freely shared and circulated online, with little discernment, it is disappointing to see how quickly hate speech and intolerance are spread and amplified. With the recent incidents concerning anti-Semitic propaganda, we have heard from countless members of the NH Jewish community as well as the Jewish membership in the House, asking us to speak out against this behavior." All the members, they said, have apologized. The incidents, often made worse by the political press and political operatives pushing narratives were "a learning experience for each member." The letter stated that it was not meant to dismiss the behavior of the members but, instead, to remind them "the weight their word carries" and to respect others. Both Packard and Cushing closed the letter by stating they stood against anti-Semitism while urging members to treat others with dignity and respect on social media — as they would in daily actions and with constituents. "And we urge every citizen of our great state to speak out against hatred, bigotry, and intolerance," they wrote. Slippery Roads ...
