ELMHURST, IL — Over the last few days, Elmhurst responded to calls involving a puppy scam, threatening messages, converter thefts and attempted retail theft. Here is the information from the reports: Puppy scam A resident in the 400 block of Sunnyside Avenue told police Tuesday that she bought three puppies and sent the suspect money. The suspect requested additional shipping fees that were not part of the original agreement. The suspect failed to deliver the puppies and ceased all communication with the resident. An investigation is pending. Threatening messages A resident in the 100 block of East Belden Avenue told police Tuesday that she received threatening messages from a stranger. An officer left a message for the suspect, requesting all communications be stopped. Converter thefts While on patrol, an officer learned of catalytic converter thefts about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect vehicles were believed to be traveling north on Route 83. The officer saw a car with heavily tinted windows possibly associated with the thefts and attempted to pull it over. The driver sped away east on Roosevelt. Suspected theft A man told police that another man standing behind his work truck had stolen items from it Monday at Willow and Third. After further investigation, it was determined the other man did not steal any items. The man with the work truck said nothing appeared to be missing. Attempted retail theft Jeffrey James, 37, of Maywood, was cited about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North Ave., on a charge of attempted retail theft. He was released on bond. According to a police report, officers responded to CVS for the report of a suspicious person who left the store and set off the security sensor alarm. The suspect went back inside the store and was found with merchandise in his cart, backpack and pockets. Driving violations Monique Brown, 21, of Chicago, was cited about 11 p.m. Monday at York and Lake on charges of no valid driver's license, possession of marijuana by a driver and operating a motor vehicle with one headlight. She was released on bond. Marquise Ratcliff, 20, of Bolingbrook was cited about 10 p.m. Tuesday at Roosevelt and Euclid on charges of driving with a revoked license, possession of marijuana by a driver, failure to signal, improper lane usage and speeding. He was released on bond. Identity theft A resident in the 400 block of Berkley Avenue told police Monday that someone used her personal information to open a bank account. The victim closed the account. An officer provided her with information on how to protect herself against identity theft. Christmas light damage A resident in the 300 block of East Madison Street told police that someone had cut the wires to his exterior Christmas lights between Saturday and Monday. Police report information is provided by local police departments. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and people charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
