Description
Join us Saturday, February 12th, 2022, as we celebrate the 58th anniversary of NASCAR legend Wendell Scott’s 1st NASCAR win. Join us for a black-tie gala featuring great entertainment, dinner, scholarship presentations, and an uplifting keynote address. This fundraising event will raise funds to help support our program and build a permanent home for our foundation and the legacy of Wendell Scott. We will honor not only his life and legacy but applaud the Wendell Scott Foundation's efforts to instill the same values Scott showcased in the hearts and minds of area children. Held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC, the upscale fundraiser will feature dinner and entertainment. We will forever remember Wendell Scott not only as a NASCAR legend in racing but also as a determined man who worked to defy the Jim Crow South's principles. Breaking barriers of color in racing, he is remembered as the only African-American driver to win the Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR's highest level, and the first African-American to obtain a NASCAR racing license. Scott's legacy is immortalized as he is now in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the highest honor bestowed in the organization. On December 1, 1963, Scott officially stepped into the winner's circle, winning his first Grand National Race. His drive, determination, and story have lived on throughout the decades and are evident in his namesake organization. He is still remembered as the only African-American driver/team owner to win a NASCAR race. To serve youth and the community, the Wendell Scott Foundation supports students' education and development through cultural enrichment activities and STEM-based programs and advocates for the importance of education and college readiness in under-served communities. The Wendell Scott Foundation administers several vital programs, including scholarships, internships, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and job readiness programs. The Legacy Gala honors those who exemplify the leadership of our namesake, Wendell Scott, by demonstrating a strong support for higher education and generosity to others through philanthropic leadership. Funds raised through the gala will both help to secure a permanent home for our foundation and directly benefit programs and services to under-served children and families throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, most of whom rely on financial subsidies to complete their studies. About the Wendell Scott Foundation On December 1, 1964 Wendell Scott broke the color barrier becoming the first and only African American NASCAR driver to win a Grand National race, NASCAR’s highest level. The Wendell Scott Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization inspired by Wendell Scott Sr. and provides services such as job-skill training, STEAM education opportunities, mentoring and other supportive services to at-risk, underserved youth between the ages of 8 – 18 years in Danville, Virginia and surrounding areas. With your generous support of the gala, you can truly make a difference in the lives of our students as we strive to achieve the Foundation’s mission of academic excellence and student success.
