Description

A Christmas orchestral concert that is heart-warming, free to the public. We invite you to mask up and join us for our annual holiday concert and return to First Lutheran Church in Columbia Heights! We are excited to present to you a concert full of character and theatrical elements, from holiday classics to another world premiere. The concert will open with Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld overture, conducted by guest conductor Andrew Kim. (If you’re a can-can dancer, the aisles are yours!) Following that is Ethel Smyth’s cinematic depiction of the rough sea in “On the Cliffs of Cornwall” from her epic opera The Wreckers. Then we will perform the world premiere of MVO’s own Nicco A. Ibarra Acevedo’s charming Serenata for Strings and then Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Snowflakes”—with none other than the Minnesota Boychoir! The second half of the concert is full of holiday classics: Johann Strauss Jr.’s On the Beautiful Blue Danube and the wild and fun “Csárdás” from Ritter Pásmán. Of course you will hear our annual rendition of LeRoy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride as well. The concert concludes with the festive “Christmas Overture” from The Forest of Wild Thyme, the second piece in our season-long exploration of the music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Bring a few extra $5’s so you can take home some of our delectable fudge! It all starts at 2:30 with a pre-concert performance by the MVO brass. The Minnesota Boychoir will also sing you Christmas carols during the intermission! The concert is free, and we can’t wait to see you there!
