Guitarist, producer and musical director Derek Renfroe will speak to students about the music industry. Stax Music Academy is pleased to host Derek Renfroe, guitarist, producer and musical director to lead our workshop about navigating through the music industry. This free event will be held at the Stax Music Academy and is open to all students in 6th - 12th grade. Doors open at 4:00p and space is limited so be sure to RSVP! More about Derek - Derek Renfroe is a Music Director and Producer currently based in Los Angeles. After leaving his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, Derek graduated from the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California in 2017 as a Questbridge Scholar. As a Music Director, Derek spent early 2021 Co-Music Directing for Olivia Rodrigo. He was a part of her “Sour Prom” concert film, her Saturday Night Live performance, and many other video performances. He currently is the Assistant Music Director for both Billie Eilish and Finneas—Derek worked on Billie’s “Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles” Disney+ concert film (recently nominated for a Grammy for “Best Music Film”), her recent run of festival performances, as well as Finneas’s recent national tour and video performances. This year, Derek has also built shows for Conan Gray (co-Music Director), Role Model (MD), Mills (MD, Guitar) and Blake Rose (MD). He has previously worked with artists like Sabrina Claudio (MD, Guitar), Felly (MD, Guitar) and Remi Wolf (MD, Guitar). As a Producer, Writer and Instrumentalist, Derek has been a part of songs that have amassed over 70 million streams on Spotify alone. This year, “Frozen” with Sabrina Claudio (Production, Writing, Instruments) was featured on Barack Obama’s summer playlist. Derek has also been able to be a part of songs like “Heartstrings” by Felly, which features Carlos Santana. Derek was able to work as a producer on Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour Prom”, working with the artist and his frequent collaborator Aron Forbes to craft a mashup of her songs to be featured in the film.
